Het lijkt misschien vreemd om een kort biografie over John Fitzgerald Kennedy met zijn moord te beginnen. Maar het is hét punt waar de kennis van de meeste mensen over Kennedy begint.
De moord vond plaats op 22 november 1963. Tijdens een officiële rondrit door Dallas (Texas) schoot een sluipschutter een kogel door zijn hoofd. Later bleek dat de vermoedelijke dader een gestoorde ex-marinier was, Lee Harvey Oswald. De filmbeelden van deze gebeurtenis zijn wereldberoemd, van grote historische waarde en nog steeds zeer schokkend:
De moord gebeurde op klaarlichte dag voor de ogen van duizenden Amerikanen. Het gaf de natie een psychologische schok die te vergelijken was met de effecten van de Japanse aanval op Pearl Harbour of de terroristische aanslagen op 11 september 2001. Het werd een ijkpunt in de Amerikaanse geschiedenis, jaren later zouden mensen elkaar nog vragen ‘En waar was jij toen je hoorde dat president Kennedy vermoord werd?’.
Het waren niet alleen de gruwelijkheid en de openbaarheid van de moord die de natie schokten. Het was ook het besef dat er een einde kwam aan het leven van een groot staatsman, één van die zeldzame personen die de geschiedenis hebben bepaald. Tijdens de ambtsperiode van Kennedy bereikte de Koude Oorlog zijn hoogtepunt. Op geen enkel ander moment waren de spanningen tussen het communistische oosten en het vrije westen zo hoog opgelopen. Als leider van het westen stond Kennedy toen voordurend in de spotlights. Soms was dat grappig, zoals toen hij zich versprak tijdens een toespraak in Berlijn ( ‘Ich bin ein Berliner’). Meestal was het echter bittere ernst. Het spannendste was ongetwijfeld de ‘Cuban Missile Crisis’. De Sovjet-Unie had toen kernraketten op Cuba geplaatst, op slechts enkele tientallen kilometers afstand van de Amerikaanse kust. Kennedy pikte dat niet en eiste dat de communisten hun raketten weg zouden halen. Hiermee riskeerde hij een derde wereldoorlog, maar toen de communisten uiteindelijk bakzeil haalden was hij de grote held van het Amerikaanse volk. Met zijn standvastige en charismatische optreden veroverde hij voor eeuwig een plaats in het hart van de Amerikanen. John F. Kennedy is nu nog steeds één van de meest populaire ex-presidenten. Toen de Amerikaanse nieuwszender ABC in februari 2000 duizend willekeurige Amerikanen vroeg ‘Who do you think was the greatest American President’, eindigde hij na Abraham Lincoln op de tweede plaats (van de 43).
Door zijn moord en zijn leiderschap in de Koude Oorlog is Kennedy historisch gezien onsterfelijk geworden. Buiten de grote gebeurtenissen om is het leven van John F Kennedy bij de meeste mensen niet erg bekend. En dat is jammer, want hij heeft een zeer interessant leven geleid vol verrassende gebeurtenissen. Laten we daarom hopen dat deze stuksgewijze biografie daar verandering in brengt.
